Everyone wants to become a better person, but some people just don’t know how to become a better person in 2018.
Even if you don’t plan to make any New Year’s resolutions, there’s always room for self-improvement. And bettering yourself doesn’t require as much action as you’d think, because it all begins with you. Once you become open to making a change, you’re already well on your way to becoming a better version of yourself. Some time you think that how to become a successful person or successful businessman. to become a successful person you have to become a better person first.
After learning what it means to be a better person, I’ve been able to develop my persona into someone I don’t mind being. I am a lot happier with who I am and I would have no problem telling my future kids the type of person I am.
Today my article is based on how to become a better person by following our guide about “how to become a better person in 2017”. Here is simple things you could do to become a better person.
20 ways to become a better person in 2018
1. Stay current.
Educate yourself on what’s going on in the world to prevent seeming insensitive or tone-deaf. Staying on top of current issues will widen your perspective and make you more aware of certain groups, cultures, issues, etc.
2. Be polite and respectful, always.
This one’s a no-brainer, but it’s still worth reminding. Regardless of whether you’re having a good or bad day, the way you treat others should remain the same.
3. Use moral reminders.
Weusually know the right thing to do, but we get ourselves into trouble when we don’t pay attention to it in the moment. A note on the bathroom mirror to tell the truth can help. Or an automated text message to think about what someone else is going through. Studies have found, for instance, that recalling the Ten Commandments eliminated cheating that otherwise would have been rampant on a test.
4. Embrace your age.
Let your hair go gray and leave those wrinkles alone. It may just be the start of a revolution. If we want to ensure a less ageist culture, then the battle begins in the mirror, wrote Ashton Applewhite. “For movements to have power, their members have to embrace the thing that is stigmatized, whether it’s being black, loving someone of the same sex, or growing old. That means moving from denying aging to accepting it, and even to embracing it.”
5. Accept the things you cannot control.
We reported on the wedding of 98-year-old Gertrude Mokotoff and 94-year-old Alvin Mann, who, like so many couples before them, met at the gym. The groom, who also earned a bachelor’s degree in history last year, shared this advice on living a long life: “Of course, one part of it is medical science, but the bigger part is that we live worry-free lives; we do not let anything we cannot control bother us in the least.”
6. Find some role models for the virtue.
Forhonesty it could be Lincoln. For courage it could be Tubman. Buy a biography of the person and learn more from this role model. Of course a parent, teacher, friend, neighbor or community leader could be a moral role model, too.
7. Start small
Don’t try to hit a home run with every virtue there is. Just pick one and make that the focus for the year. Perhaps it could be one that for you is a particular struggle.
7. Practice, practice, practice.
No one becomes a chess master in a day or even a year. It takes tremendous practice. So, too, no one becomes a compassionate person overnight. By helping, and helping again, and helping again, we can slowly build up our characters in this area.
Of course New Year’s resolutions are easy to make and even easier to break. Whether we keep them has to do with our character, too.
8. Get involved
Find a cause you’re passionate about and see how you can contribute, whether it’s volunteering every quarter (or more often!) or making a donation. Notice that a certain topic fires you up or hits you emotionally? Pitch in and make a difference instead of taking a backseat.
9. Be thankful.
Thankful people always become a battery. Expressing gratitude is such a simple way to improve yourself. Go even further than a simple “thank you” and reciprocate your appreciation. Your health and relationships will also benefit as a result.
10. Give up your time to help others.
The key here is to do something nice for the sake of doing something nice, without expecting anything in return. Whether it’s a coworker who needs your input on a project or a friend who’d appreciate help moving, put any selfish tendencies aside to lend a hand.
11. Donate Blood.
By donating blood you can definitely become a better person. One donation can help save up to 3 lives. Blood products can’t be manufactured, they’re only obtainable through a donor. Only 38% of the population can donate…could you be part of that 38%? The Red Cross has a registry of drives and walk-in centers for whole blood and platelet donations across the country; but your local hospital would probably welcome your donation as well.
12. Schedule your week, or even day, ahead of time.
No need to micromanage yourself or anything. But if there are things you *really* want to do and find yourself canceling or blowing off last-minute based on how you’re feeling, you might benefit from putting stuff on paper, according to therapists. Planning your life out ahead of time (like say, every Sunday night or every morning before school or work) can help you not make plans based on your mood in the moment, but based on what you really want.
13. Read more books or listen to more podcasts.
Maybe that means a book that’ll teach you something new, or a podcast that will make you feel less alone or it’s something outside of your go-to genre that’ll expand your horizons. Just something other than passive escapism (which, hey, I’m a big fan of, but not all the time).
14. Turn your bed into a sanctuary.
By now you know that sleep is vital to happiness and overall functioning. But do you ever think about where you’re sleeping and how you treat that space?
It can be easy to turn your bed into a catch-all for laundry or an extension of your office. However, your brain needs to associate it with sleep ― and experts say it might have difficulty doing so if you’re also using it for other activities. Keep your bed a place for sleep and sex, and see if it transforms your Zs.
15. Schedule mental health days in advance.
Sometimes you wake up and need a mental health day without notice. Other times, though, you’ll have a pretty good feeling about when you’ll need time to recover. Like, taking an extra day after a weekend with your stressful AF parents or calling out from work the day of a therapy appointment when you know you’re *really* going to get into some shit.
16. Come up with some safety outfits for bad days.
When I wake up on a bad mental health day, getting out of bed can feel like a herculean task — so much so that once I do it, I don’t have a ton of energy to put into getting ready for the day. Which is fine in theory, because I don’t necessarily want to care about what I look like, but I always wind up feeling worse later when I realize how uncomfortable I am being out and about looking as bad as I feel.
So, I have a few reliable outfits that are 1) comfortable and 2) make me look and feel good about myself that I know I can grab on those bad days without any effort. What safety feels like for you will undoubtedly be different, but whatever it is, it’s a worthy investment.
17. Use social media to your advantage
Research shows that excessive social media use can be bad for your mental health, and it’s necessary to take a break from your newsfeed. But let’s be real: It’s impossible to expect to stay unplugged from those updates all the time.
Reframe the way you view posts on platforms like Facebook and Instagram so you can build a healthier relationship with them. Experts recommend unfollowing accounts that don’t bring you joy, subscribing to more positive content and reminding yourself that what you’re seeing in your feed only shows a small portion of someone’s life.
18. Make a goal rather than a resolution.
Smaller goals may be more attainable than an overall, lofty aim. Pick a few things you want to achieve this year, then be real with yourself about the progress, Poon advised.
“As with any habit, it can be really hard to maintain over the long term,” she said. “Check in every month and think about your goals and what you are trying to accomplish. Then reflect and re-evaluate if they are realistic.”

19. Indulge in a new show
Sometimes a mental escape from reality is just what you need to reset your brain.
Try watching something funny (studies show laughter really is the best medicine) whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed. It can help curb your stress, Susan Krauss Whitbourne, a professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts.
20. Master a Game.
Mastering a game–such as chess or Go–teaches you strategy, it teaches you to compete, and it teaches you fle
xibility and adaptability. In addition, you learn to master your emotions–playing chess against a worthy opponent can be mental torture. Also, it teaches you to lose — which is something that you need to know how to do, if you want to win.
